Kujo Ninshi (九条任子)

Ninshi KUJO (born October 31, 1173, died February 3, 1239) was an empress and nyoin (a close female relative of the Emperor or a woman of comparable standing) from the end of Heian Period to Kamakura Period. She was the second consort of the eighty-second Emperor Gotoba. Her father was Kanpaku (chief adviser to the Emperor) Kanezane KUJO. Her mother was FUJIWARA no Kenshi (Kaneko). Her ingo (a title of respect given to close female relatives of the Emperor or a woman of comparable standing) was Gishumonin. Her posthumous Buddhist name was Shojochi. Imperial Princess Shoshi (Shunkamonin) was her child.

In 1189, she was given Jusani (Junior Third Rank). In January 1190, she was sent court to become nyogo (a consort of an emperor) when Emperor Gotoba celebrated his genpuku (coming-of-age ceremony). In April 1190, it was formally decided for her to become the second consort. In 1195, she gave birth to Imperial Princess Shoshi. In 1196, she left Dairi (the Imperial Palace) due to her father Kanezane's downfall. In 1200, she was permitted to use ingo and became Gishumonin. She received religious precepts under Honen when her mother Kenshi died in 1201. Her father Kanezane died in 1207. Imperial Princess Shoshi died in 1211. In 1212, she declined her ingo, nenkan (a right granted as a stipend to members of the Imperial family) and nenshaku (a right granted as a stipend to a retired emperor, the mother of the Empress Dowager, the Empress Dowager, the Empress, and so forth to nominate a person for a certain rank conferred to them on the occasion of the annual conferment of a rank to them). Her husband, the Retired Emperor Gotoba, was exiled to Oki Islands after the Jokyu Disturbance in 1221. She died in 1238. She was 66 years of age.
